Full Report
Old Georgians produced one of their most important league performances of the season, beating Southwark Lancers 38–5 at St George’s College to move into third place in Counties 3 Surrey.
Coming into the match, the table made the stakes clear. Southwark sat third on 54 points, with OGs just behind in fourth on 51. Both sides had played 15 games and won 10, so this was always likely to be a proper contest.
OGs started exactly as they needed to. An early scrum helped settle the side, before Dom Bart crossed for the opening try. Matt Johnson added the conversion to give OGs a 7–0 lead and a strong platform.
Southwark hit back with a try of their own to make it 7–5, reminding everyone that this was not going to be one-way traffic. But OGs responded well, playing with tempo and confidence in the sunshine.
The next Old Georgians score came through Checo, with Johnson converting to push the lead out to 14–5. From there, OGs began to take control. Their handling was sharp, the support lines were strong, and they looked dangerous whenever they moved the ball into space.
Sam Owen added the next try to make it 19–5, giving OGs breathing room and shifting the momentum firmly their way. With Southwark under increasing pressure, the game began to open up, and OGs were good enough to take advantage.
The bonus point arrived through Jamie Martin, who finished well to make it 26–5 and put the result within reach. It was the kind of score that reflected the afternoon: direct when needed, but with enough ambition to keep asking questions of the Southwark defence.
OGs were not done. Campbell Begley-Jones crossed next, with Johnson converting to make it 33–5, before Owen added another late score to round off an excellent team display.
The final whistle confirmed a 38–5 win, five league points, and a result that moved OGs above Southwark into third place.
The Bigger Picture
This was more than just a home win. Against the side directly above them in the table, OGs delivered a performance with control, pace and plenty of edge.
It was also exactly the kind of rugby that reflects this group well: competitive, committed and entertaining without losing the enjoyment of the occasion. In good conditions at St George’s College, OGs put together an excellent all-round display and got the reward their performance deserved.
With third place now in their hands, attention turns to another home match next week against Haslemere as the league campaign moves into its final stretch.
