Old Georgians delivered a strong away performance at Wimbledon RFC, beating Old Johnians 55–14 in the penultimate league fixture of the season.

On a bright afternoon, OGs started exactly as they would have wanted. Lyle Reynolds opened the scoring with the first try of the match, and Matt Johnson added the conversion to make it 0–7.

The early momentum stayed with OGs. Will Lawson crossed soon after, with Johnson once again adding the extras to extend the lead to 0–14. It was a composed start from the visitors, who quickly settled into their rhythm and put Old Johnians under pressure.

The hosts responded with a try of their own to make it 7–14, but OGs were not knocked out of stride. Eoghan Sweeney hit back with another Old Georgians try, pushing the lead out to 7–19.

Old Johnians scored again to bring the match back to 14–19, but that proved to be as close as they would get. From there, OGs took control of the game.

Reynolds added another try to make it 14–24, before Johnson’s conversion stretched the lead further. Then came a trademark burst from Ben Watts, whose pace took him over for a try that arrived almost too quickly to capture. Johnson converted again, and OGs were now well clear at 14–33.

The final stages belonged almost entirely to Old Georgians. Sam Owen finished smartly in the corner, Joe Scatchard added another, and Johnson continued to keep the scoreboard moving with his boot.

With OGs leading 14–50 heading into the final minutes, there was still time for one more score. Owen crossed again late on to put the finishing touch on an excellent afternoon’s work and seal a 55–14 win.

It was a complete team performance: clinical in attack, controlled when it mattered, and full of energy right through to the final whistle.

The Bigger Picture

This was an important result for OGs, not only because of the scoreline, but because of what it confirmed.

With one league match remaining, Old Georgians are now guaranteed to finish third in Counties 3 Surrey. It is a strong return for the season and a reflection of the consistency the group has shown across the campaign.

There was also a special milestone for Lex Powell, who made his 50th appearance for the club. A great achievement, and exactly the sort of moment that underlines what this club is built on: commitment, contribution and people who keep turning up.

The league season concludes next Saturday against Kingston, before attention turns to the Counties 3 Championship knock-out cup quarter final at Ealing Trailfinders on Saturday 2nd May.
