Full Report
Old Georgians signed off their Counties 3 Surrey league season in style with a 70–26 win away at Kingston RFC, combining sharp attacking rugby with a couple of major club milestones.
On a hot afternoon at Kingston, OGs were made to work early. The hosts started strongly and pinned OGs back inside their own 5m before opening the scoring to take a 7–0 lead.
OGs did not take long to respond. Tom Ellis crossed for the first Old Georgians try of the afternoon, with Matt Johnson converting to level the match at 7–7. From there, the visitors began to find their rhythm.
Charlie Gavin added the next OGs score, with the conversion bouncing back off the posts, before a penalty try following a high tackle put OGs 19–7 ahead and saw Kingston reduced to 14 men.
Kingston did manage to hit back and keep themselves in the contest, but OGs continued to stretch the game. Lex finished well in the corner, before Sam Owen crossed to take the score out to 31–14 after Johnson’s conversion.
The second half saw OGs move through the gears. Albie Condron added another excellent try, before Johnson’s boot continued to keep the scoreboard moving. In doing so, he moved level with the OGRFC all-time points record before going on to break it later in the match.
With Kingston down to 13 for a spell, OGs kept playing with pace and confidence. Jack Gilligan crossed, followed by George Burns, as the visitors pushed beyond 50 points.
Then came Lyle Reynolds’ moment. Already chasing the club’s single-season try record, Reynolds crossed once to equal Sam Owen’s previous mark before completing his hat-trick late on to set a new OGRFC record for most tries in a season.
It was fitting that in the final league game of the campaign, two players wrote themselves into the club record books. Matt Johnson passed Chris Hanson’s long-standing all-time league points record of 515, finishing the season on 522 points. He also broke the single-season points record, surpassing Jack Cooney’s previous total of 147 and ending the campaign with 158.
Kingston kept going and added late scores of their own, but the result had long been settled. The final whistle confirmed a 70–26 win for OGs, a full-blooded attacking performance and a strong finish to the league season.
The Bigger Picture
This was a proper end-of-season performance from OGs: plenty of tries, good travelling support, records broken, and a five-point win to close the league campaign.
Old Georgians finish third in Counties 3 Surrey, behind unbeaten champions Thamesians and second-placed Effingham & Leatherhead. It marks a strong league season for the club, with plenty of progress, attacking rugby and individual milestones along the way.
There is still more rugby to come. OGs now turn their focus to the knock-out cup quarter final against Hucclecote RFC at Ealing Trailfinders, with a big cup occasion waiting next weekend.
